e-WKM, which means computer tickets
Passengers of the Warsaw public transport can buy 30- and 90-day personal tickets as well as senior personal passes through the Internet. This fast and convenient form of selling was introduced on June, 21.
The e-WKM service can be used by those who have a personalized Warsaw City Card (or an Electronic Student Card), which means over 730,000 users of public transport. All of them can buy tickets without any additional charges – the price is the same as in the ZTM tariff in Warsaw.
One can buy a ticket coded on a card via Internet without leaving home and at any time using so called fast transfers or a charge card. Sale is made by respecting safety rules, in compliance with the THAWTE safety certificate and the SSL certificate.
Coding a ticket in one of 50 coding devices is the only additional thing which is necessary after purchase. There are 50 such devices available within the pilot stage of the service implementation. Devices have been installed at the Warsaw underground stations and in the ZTM Passenger Service Centers (except for the center at the PKP Warszawa Wschodnia railway station). Place a card in a device slot and choose an option KODOWANIE to code a ticket. Coding a ticket on the WKM card will take only a few seconds. A coded ticket has to be activated in a validating machine or at an underground gate before the first ride.
Passengers who will buy a ticket via Internet can be informed about close expiry date of a contract by e-mail or text message. Such information will be sent 3 days prior to the expiry date of a ticket.
It is estimated that even a few thousand passengers may buy long-term tickets through the Internet. It is possible that short-term tickets (1-, 3-, 7- and 14-day ones) will also be sold via Internet.
How to buy a ticket on the Warsaw City Card via Internet and how to code it?
Ticket purchase via Internet is extremely easy.
The whole transaction is made on the website ztm.waw.pl/ewkm. You only need to register your Internet account there – any e-mail address chosen by a user can be a login. A user provides a personal password to their account.
When using a device, insert a card and choose the option KODOWANIE. In a few seconds you can use public transport after activating a ticket in a validating machine or at an underground entrance gate before the first trip
On June 21, the information campaign of Warsaw Transport Authority promoting Internet ticket sale has started together with the new e-WKM service.
Information about new convenient way of buying long-term tickets will reach passengers in the form of posters, which were placed in display cases by entrances to the underground stations as well as at the Młociny communication hub or in the Wileńska shopping mall and in the Bemowo shopping gallery. The regional TV channels TVN Warszawa and TVP Warszawa are broadcasting an advertising spot. Moreover, the e-WKM spot can be watched on the CityInfo monitors inside the underground cars and on the Info screens at underground stations. Banners have been put on the websites and detailed information about the service can be found on the ZTM website.
At the pilot stage of the service, most devices have been installed at the underground stations. At this stage, the campaign is directed to passengers – Internet users who often use the underground. At the stations, right next to devices, the hostesses distribute leaflets informing how to buy and where to code “Internet” ticket. Leaflets will be also available in the ZTM Passenger Service Centers.

* The number of coding points will be increased systematically.
THAWTE is a leader in providing certificates that use the latest security codes. Transaction security is ensured by 256-bit data encoding via Internet browsers. It would take… billions of years to crack the 256-bit key. Transactions are processed with the safe SSL protocol (Secure Socket Layer) together with digital certificates, thereby guaranteeing data security. Charge card and fast transfer data is directly transmitted to an authorization server where transaction authentication is performed. The system guarantees complete Internet transaction security.
SSL is a network protocol applied to secure Internet connections. SSL realizes encoding, server authentication and ensures integrity and confidentiality of the information that is sent. Accessing a secure website (one that employs SSL protocol) happens simultaneously to the determination of algorithm and coding keys that are subsequently applied to data transmission between a browser and a website server. The SSL protocol is one of the methods used to ensure financial transaction security.
Let us to remind you! An Electronic Student Card may be a personalized ticket carrier. That is why personal long-term ZTM tickets – also those bought via internet – will still be encoded and honored on an Electronic Student Card after June, 30 2010.
