Facilities for blinds
Public transport of the capital city is becoming more friendly for the blind and those with poor eyesight. ZTM has just prepared a ticket which will enable these passengers access to Warsaw underground stations.
This ticket is the specially modified Warsaw City Card. On the obverse of a card, there is the Braille inscription WKM and on the reverse the logotype of the Special Olympics Europe, which will be held in Warsaw (1800 disabled sportsmen from the whole Europe will take part in the September event).
Warsaw Transport Authority will prepare 4,000 of such tickets altogether. The first batch (700 of them) has just been handed over to Stołeczne Centrum Osób Niepełnosprawnych (Warsaw center for the disabled), Polski Związek Niewidomych (the Polish Association of the Blind) and the “Vis Maior” Foundation.
ZTM has introduced new vehicle equipment standard which will facilitate disabled people to use public transport to a great extent. The Mobilis buses equipped with door opening buttons with Braille inscriptions have already appeared in the streets of Warsaw.
The inscription ”STOP “ has been placed on the buttons right by doors and the letter “S” on remaining buttons.
Doorsteps and landing edges have been marked in more contrasting way owing to application of yellow and black slats.
Similar facilities will also be used in 186 PESA tram cars and 660 MZA buses, which will be delivered successively to the capital city starting from this year.
