Sign language translator at ZTM
A small device – an online sign language translator has been at the disposal of deaf persons at the ZTM premises at ul. Żelazna 61 between 8.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. since 2nd of April.
From 2nd of April, a deaf person who will come to the ZTM in order to get information about operation of public transport in the Warsaw agglomeration, will find a clearly marked device – an online sign language translator (PSL/SLS) at the front desk. It will enable fast, efficient and professional service of deaf persons coming to the ZTM.
In Poland there are about 100.000 deaf persons and about 900.000 of those hearing-impaired. All these people communicate by means of the sign language system (SLS) or the Polish sign language (PSL). According to the recommendations of the European Union, the users of the sign language should be provided with „access to communication in public institutions in their national sign language” (2010 Brussels Declaration on Sign Language in the European Union). In Poland, the Act on sign language is going to come into effect in April 2012. It was passed on 28th of July 2011 in order to facilitate communication of deaf persons and provide them with the access to information.
